Blender Magazine Letter
The April 2005 issue of Blender magazine, page 20 begins the reader mail section titled "You've Got Mail." The third letter, printed just to the left of Mariah Carey's naked thigh, comes from "TODD SNIDER, NASHVILLE." In a previous issue of Blender, Todd had been named to a "best of 2004" list and wrote this letter in response:
I've read every issue cover to cover and I consider being anywhere on your "Best of" lists a great honor. I bought an issue at an airport on the way to a show. I saw "The Worst Songs of 2004," elbowed my wife, and said, "Watch this -- I'm gonna take one on the chin." Then I saw my picture and my heart sank. But when I saw it was in the "Best" part, I did a little Fred Sanford dance right there in the security checkpoint line.

Black and Blue in New York City
Written for Uberlists (uberbelle.com), below is Todd Snider's thoughts on the Rolling Stones' Black and Blue.
Music of Our Lives
black and blue in new york city
by todd snider
i met her in a fully locked down drug rehabilitation center
i had been told this was not a place to find your soul mate
she was beautiful…had no idea what i did for a living,
loved dylan and neil young
and made me laugh my head off.
the day she checked out i told her i loved her
and that I’d find a way to come to new york and find her
when i was free
jump ahead two months and I’m free…
back to the viva satellite album I’d left waiting….
"where should we mix it todd?"
"new york"
id been to new york…but not enough...
i didnt know it yet.
the whole way on the plane i listened to black and blue
by the rolling stones,
a record i had dismissed earlier in life
and came back to out of sheer lust
for any unfamiliar sounding stones i could find.
now by some twist of fate
black and blue is the sound track to the movie
that is the love of my life
my marriage
and very distinctly new york city
hotdogs, cigs, cologne and warm urine
mixed with that rumbling vague sound that rewrites itself all day everyday
the roar of the city…
sirens, voices, music, engines…
black and blue takes me back to manhattan every time
i walked to the address i had
she came to the door in black pants and a black shirt
black hair...brown skin…
jesus
the window was open...
the place was little...
she had on some foreign music
there was a painting of a man completely blue
and a woman completely red ...
both on the same wall
i knew she painted...
but assumed these werent hers
i was struck by what i would call a
"defiant resignation"
or "confident sadness"
to these painted people
down but not defeated….
how i felt…
in that moment
without comment…
i stuck black and blue on her cd player
and decided i wanted
a house
decorated like her apartment
AND
it was like that cd
and her apartment
were made for each other
the next morning i woke up, snuck out of bed
and down the manhattan street….
i bought her a bouquet of some huge orange flowers like id never seen
and i brought them back up to her
she said she thought i should leave
WHAT? leave? what did i do?
she said
"you never said anything about my paintings"
"what paintings?"
she pointed to the blue man
and the red woman
"im a certified fool baby"
mick jagger
i knew at this moment i had found my soul mate…
my match...
someone i understood...
and
she had just kicked me out of her home
i went back to my hotel...
told my brother/tour manager i was thru with love
put on the black and blue record.....
cried a little, drank a lot
and went to sleep.
i woke up later that night and headed over to the album mixing session
it was pain
some guy i didnt know
telling me my record needed more "sky"
ugh….
luckily…the non label guy...the engineer...the stranger doing actual work
was a completely bearable human being….dare i say enjoyable
we got to talking and the next thing i know
hes teaching me piano
and im getting it pretty quick
i started with the intro to "memory motel"...
and while the engineer mixed, i rolled the fattest joint i could,
sat at that piano and played those chord changes over and over
til my heartache drifted faded and turned
turned into one of those chores youre gonna do later
"youre just a memory"
im not sure how much time went by
but at some point
a voice came thru the cutting floor speakers
and announced that i had a visitor
it was her…
i dont know how she knew where i was
but it was her
and that was all that fucking mattered to me.
there she was….
that beautiful doe eyed black haired spanish angel
the craziest bitch ive ever met
the funniest, dancingest, kindest celebrator of life that i have ever known
my wife, my whole life
the artist
we spent all that next day laying around in central park
its my favorite memory of life
today
she wakes up every morning and works on her paintings
she sells most of them
and while i try not to show it ...
i always hate to see them go.
im over here in the same room
working on my songs
still trying to make that album with "sky" on it i guess
or maybe just another album
but
today
as i sit here typing
with black and blue by the stones on
i feel like im back in new york city
staring up thru the central park trees
up into the skyline
listening to the subtle roar of the city
holding hands with the girl whose paintings still inspire me
holding hands with the girl
that decorated this house
"shes got a mind of her own
and she use it well
mighty fine
one of a kind"
